WHAT IF THERE WERE NO EXAMS?

I took active participation in debates in secondary school. Don't look at me like an effico. All I did was to sit at the back seat and analyse the topic while watching the debaters perform. Hehehe...What? Oh, you thought I meant I actually went up stage to argue? Nah, I didn't have strength to memorize three pages full of arguments. In all my years of active participation *winks* there was one topic that stood out on my list of favourite topics and it was "Is examination the true test of Knowledge" I spent more time arguing on this topic with members of my observatory group in the back seat, my point being that one cannot really use exams to measure intelligence when most teachers insisted we memorize a textbook's definition of terms and vomit it on our answer sheets to make marking easy for them. In most exams, your understanding of a concept didn't matter. Well that's a story for another day. But my gist today is based on a thought I have been processing; a world I have been dreaming of; an idea that has grown deep roots in my mind for a long time.

What if there were no exams in schools? What would you have done differently?

Uh huh! I see your eyes shining...don't allow those truancy thoughts running through your mind. But what if you had the power make exams disappear? Would you have loved to explore more subjects knowing you don't have anything to lose? While you warm up to share your ideas on this matter, let me share mine. If there were no exam eh...

I would have loved to explore various subjects like Physics and Chemistry but just at introductory level. I would have loved to continue Fine Arts without the fear of writing it in WAEC as the teacher threatened me. I would have loved to add History to my lists of subjects because I love to know the stories behind things. I would have loved to take a sneak peek into Further Maths, emphasis on the sneak peek. Geography...uh...still loading that thought. Accounts...didn't take that subject even though I studied it in the University and still won't. I would have crashed into classes and enjoyed learning without the heartache of exams.

But you know what? Exams or no exams, I'm glad that I have a choice to learn whatever I want via the internet and I can engage in intelligent discussions and just learn for the joy of it and not because I have to write exams. I am as interested in medical research as I am in Global warming. I watch Disney Channel and still can't get enough of CNBC Africa, Bloomberg, Style Network and Food Network. It's called locating learning amusement park and as my friend, TJ.Bard will say, "the mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited."

So guys, let's hear yours
If you had the magic wand to make exams disappear what would you have done differently and what subjects would you have taken interest in?

My dad would forver always quote julius Caesar, Macbeth, or Shakespare and I so wished we could share that father and son moment 2geda. Then there's Technical Drawing(how do they make those lines Meet?).... Government(why bother when there's This day and sun)... GIZI lemme stop here B4 my comment pass d discuss.

  3. Ironically, if there were no exams, I won't read jack. I probably would just be in the science lab trying out mixtures of chemicals every other 9am, monday to saturday (if the lab would stay open) :D. U can choose to take this as an honest comment or leave it. LOL

  4. well, if there was no exams den wen i was quite young honestly i dnt knw if i will ever have any interest in some subjects as i do now. But exams i will say also killed my interest in some subjects, like Literature, Government, Accounting, and Fine art(cos i was a very lazy drawer at first, dats cos i wasnt prepared to lower my grades in skul in d name of learnin arts). I couldnt continue literature cos teachers said its for arts students, i even disobeyed to study it on ma own and did it at SSCE, bt wen d whole 9 papers were siezed i could nt continue Literature, because d whole novels were changed to new ones n u bet i couldnt afford readin all of dem in a space of 6months. Basically exams are gud, bt in a more advanced level, i will prefer dey rate exam less, n use ur abilities as d test for knowledge nt exams, a
fterall people have bad days durin exams, or even get sick.

  5. I would go for government, History and Literature classes without any fear. Also iwould av been with my Medical friends during their classes. What I almost forgot is Account and Commerce. But the problem is this it would make me a of all trade and master of n... How can one live in life where there is no specialization? Exams helps us to know direction and maintain focus.

    1. It doesn't make you a master of none dear, it only serves you a cocktail of knowledge. That I like to watch The Doctors on TV, doesn't make me want to specialize in medicine research.

  6. Exams aint d true test of knowledge bt sometimes it is d test of mental efficiency..d ability of d mind to deliver when prompted. But from a broader perspective,Innovation, via productive engagement of d mind should be d objective of education and not just d aquisition of information.the mind should be given room and flexibility to explore and break into new frontiers, using previous information as a springbboard in any field of endeavour..Education should provoke discovery of new things and not just circling around old theories from generation to generation without makin any progressive advancement...but then knowin a little abt everythin is a matter of personal development so if there were to be no exams..wow!..ill delve into astronomy cos I love d adventure of understand the secrets of d amazin universe in which we live in.Its so awesome and kinda brings me closer to d divine..lol!I love History cos it unveils d potency of mankind and his Actions..I love psycology cos it helps me undrstand d human psyche and hw to relate wth different kinds of pple to bring out d best in them hence, maximisin my human relationships,I luv mathematics,A bit of medcine...I cld go on and on...like u said gizi..tank God for d internet!knowledge is gud..go get it!......JUSTICE DAVID.
